Don't be put off by taking a trip to Germany's capital because you've heard it’s a tad on the pricy side, because there's actually plenty of things that you can do for free. I've put together the top 15 things that I think you should do when visiting Berlin that will also save money for beer…

1. The Berlin Wall

Monuments tend to be outside and outside tends to be free. Germany's central memorial to the victims of the Berlin Wall stretches to 1.4km along Bernauer Strasse, along the actual course of the Wall. This is the best place to learn how all the elements of how the border fortifications were enlarged and perfected over time.

2. Pay your respects at the Holocaust Memorial

Visit the main sight which commemorates the millions of Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. Comprising of 2,711 blocks of concrete standing parallel to each other in various rows which makes it a beautiful tribute to those who suffered most during the Nazi regime.

3. Free Museums

4. Flea Markets

Berlin offers a huge variety of flee markets all around the city that are open on Sundays, conveniently when most other shops are closed. Some of the best flea markets around the city are located in Mauer Park.

5. Buskers and Karaoky

Possible one of the best freebies available in Berlin is the acts that take place at the Mauer Park. This is the best way to spend you Sunday! After a stroll around the flea market, head over to the amphitheater to watch the brave belt in front of hundreds on karaoke as well as acts such as magicians, dancers and more.


6. Free walking tours

To get an insight on the city from the experts, many free walking tours are available focusing on specific districts, interesting parts of the city's history, or Berlin's iconic street art scene. The tours are free but its expected to offer a tip to the guide if you enjoyed the experience.

7. Food Markets

Check out the local delicacies at a farmers' market. One of the best is Kollwitzplantz on Thursdays and Saturdays.

8. Street art

Berlin is known for its epic graffiti scene and the whole place in plastered in it. Keep an eye out as you walk around.


9. Brandenburg Gate

Berlin's most iconic landmark, the Brandenburg Gate, which was erected in 1791 as the royal city gate, but spent the Cold War years abutting the Berlin Wall and thus becoming a symbol of the divided nation.


10. Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie is the name given to the crossing point between West and East Berlin. You may find it a little gimmicky with the dressed up soldiers and props. However, the barriers to the crossing are 100% real and it is now a popular tourist attraction that is absolutely free to go and visit.


11. Take a stroll down Landwehr Canal

Take a break from the busy city and head down to Kreuzberg district for a long, relaxing stroll along Landwehr Canal which cuts right through the heart of the city.

12. Enjoy the city parks and gardens

Another great way to ascape from the city is to wonder off at one of Berlin's many green spaces which, of course won't cost you a cent. Such parks include Charlottenburg Palace Gardens or even Berlin's huge Tiergarten Park.

13. Take a dip

Go with the locals and cool off on a hot summer's day in one of Berlin's lakes. The city's largest lakes Muggelsee will take you slightly out the city centre but its pretty woodland walks down to the sandy edge will make it worth that little extra effort.

14. Free views at the Reichstag Dome

The Reichstag is no doubt one of Berlin's most well-known landmarks, and you can get to the top for free! Book a slot online well in advance and you will have access to the Dome for incredible city views over Berlin.


15. Berliner Dom

Stand in awe of the exterior of the Italian Renaissance-style former royal court church, the Berliner Dom. The interior brims with artwork but admission is only free during services.
